What if I told you the name of this city comes from the Dakota word for sugar maple tree? Welcome to Chanhassen Minnesota. This city blends suburban life with natural beauty.

Chanhassen is located about 16 miles southwest of Minneapolis. It is primarily in Carver County. However a small portion extends into Hennepin County.

The name Chanhassen comes from the Dakota word “chanhasen”. This means “sugar-maple tree”. “Chan” means tree and “haza” means a tree with sap. Before it was named Chanhassen the area was known as St Hubertus. This was after the historic church.

The city officially merged with Chanhassen Township in 1967. This brought the population to 4200. As of 2020 the population was 25947. A 2022 estimate placed it at 26224.

Early settlers saw pristine property and beautiful lakes here. German farmers with Fr Mayr developed a strong community spirit. Visionaries of the 1970s brought new ideas. They took risks to build a better community.

In the 1850s and 1860s many German Catholic farming immigrants settled here. They sought a safer more prosperous life. This coincided with the end of Indian land titles in Chanhassen. Fr Mayr wanted these immigrants to unite through the church. They would work worship and attend school together.

This led to the St Hubert’s congregation. It thrives in Chanhassen even today. The first St Hubert’s church was built in the late 1860s. A second church followed in 1887. This historic church can still be seen on the east end of town.

By the turn of the century Chanhassen resembled German Bavaria. Fr Mayr’s vision of a supportive community had succeeded.

For the next fifty years Chanhassen remained a quiet crossroads. The population in the mid 1950s was about 200 people. The town included Pauly’s Bar Joe’s Saloon and Mason’s store. Also present were Albert Pauly’s General Store Chanhassen State Bank and Schutrop’s Feed Mill.

In 1955 the Minnesota Horticultural Society established a Landscape Arboretum. They acquired 160 acres of Chanhassen land for the University of Minnesota. Some considered it a risk to place the project here. Today the University Arboretum is a community jewel.

In 1968 Herb Bloomberg envisioned a 600-seat dinner theater. The City Council embraced this exciting idea. Today the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres draws people from all over.

In the early 1970s the city government planned for growth. By the late 1970s Chanhassen began a redevelopment plan. This included businesses and industrial companies. The city purchased land to create its first park. Today the city has many parks and lakes. Lake Ann Park is a favorite.

Many neighborhoods in Chanhassen were once German immigrant farms. Farming declined by the 1960s. Lush green farmland became new neighborhoods.

Chanhassen offers much to explore. Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum or Paisley Park. Catch a show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Explore the Eckankar Spiritual Campus and the Temple of Eck.

Before you leave take a moment to appreciate the blend of community spirit and natural beauty here in Chanhassen. It is a place where the past and present come together beautifully.
