Changi Air Base East’s story starts with land reclamation. Inaugurated on November 29, 2004, the base sits on 2 square kilometers of reclaimed land. This strategic location is about 2 kilometers east of Changi Airport. It is also about 1.5 kilometers west of Changi Naval Base.
The location of Changi Air Base East is very strategic. Its proximity to the South China Sea gives it an advantage. Aircraft can reach training areas faster than from other air bases. The 145 Squadron saves five to seven minutes of transit time. This saves fuel and reduces costs.
Currently, Changi Air Base East is home to several squadrons. The 145 Squadron flies F-16D Block 52 fighters. Also, the 112 Squadron operates Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft. These tankers provide aerial refueling.
Changi Air Base East shares a close relationship with Singapore Changi Airport. They co-share runway facilities. A third runway is planned for future civilian expansion.
Initially, the runway at Changi Air Base East was 2748 meters long. It was later extended to 4000 meters. This allows the base to handle larger aircraft and increased air traffic. This will accommodate the future Terminal 5.
The base was closed for runway reconstruction. It reopened at the end of 2018.
