Ever wonder where Seattle’s soccer dreams take flight? That would be right here at Championship Field.
Championship Field is more than just a patch of grass. It is a soccer-specific stadium on the campus of Seattle University. It is home to the Seattle Redhawks men’s and women’s soccer teams. Since 1994, this has been their cherished ground.
Originally built in 1994, Championship Field got its name in 1998. This was after Seattle University’s men’s team clinched the 1997 NAIA National Championship. A proud moment etched into the very soil of this field.
Think of the roar of the crowd. Picture the elation as Seattle U transitioned to Division I NCAA athletics. Improvements were needed to meet Division I standards. Our firm was hired to assess Seattle University’s athletic facilities.
Championship Field underwent a major renovation in 2005. This facelift followed the men’s soccer team’s 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship victory. The stadium now boasts 650 permanent seats for dedicated fans.
Drainage was a big problem. Poor drainage restricted the field’s use. The field could only be used from late spring to early fall. Renovations solved the field issues. They included new subsurface drainage, irrigation, sand root zone, and sod surface. The result is a premier natural turf facility. It is so good that some mistake it for synthetic turf.
Championship Field has seen its share of thrilling matches. The record attendance stands at 1,737. This was set on September 24, 2015. Seattle defeated Washington by a score of 2–1. A game etched in the memories of Redhawks fans.
But Seattle U soccer isn’t the only club to practice and play on Championship Field. The facility has hosted some of the world’s best club soccer teams. Manchester United held practices and a skills clinic here in July 2011. Santos Laguna of Liga MX practiced here in March 2013. Tottenham Hotspur held a clinic with Special Olympics in July 2014. The U.S. Women’s National Team trained here in October 2015.
The women’s team even christened the renovated field with a 4-0 victory. They played against Cal State Monterey Bay on August 24, 2006. The men followed suit that same day. They beat Chico State 4-3.
So, the next time you pass by Championship Field, remember it is not just a field. It is a stage where champions have played. It is a place where future soccer stars hone their skills, and where the spirit of the game lives on.
