In 1804, a grand event graced the grounds of Champion Lodge. The Prince of Wales himself, later to become King George IV, paid a visit to this grand house in Camberwell. This lavish estate, originally known simply as “The Lodge,” became Champion Lodge under the ownership of Philip Champion de Crespigny. Philip, a prominent proctor of the Admiralty court, acquired the house around 1741 and officially made it his own in 1755. This visit from royalty held special significance. The next year, Philip’s son, Claude Champion de Crespigny, was granted a baronetcy by the crown. Sadly, despite its royal connections and sprawling 30-acre park, Champion Lodge was demolished in 1841. This grand reminder of a bygone era, once bustling with life and graced by royalty, now exists only in memory. The echoes of its grandeur are left to our imagination, here where Love Walk now meets Denmark Hill.
