John (Jack) Champion, a South Carolina native, journeyed to Texas and purchased over 200 acres at the headwaters of Brushy Creek in 1854. This land became home to him, his wife Naomi, and their growing family. Sadly, Naomi, after bearing seven of their nineteen children, passed away in 1862. Her grave, marked and remembered, stands as the oldest in the cemetery. The Champion Cemetery Plaque serves as more than a marker. As you stand before this plaque, imagine John Champion, a Civil War veteran and Williamson County Sheriff, surveying his land, his family by his side.
