You know, back in the 1970s, Chalk Hill Estate was considered one of the finest housing projects in Britain. It was a different time then. A time of optimism and hope for a better future. Standing on the site of the old Victorian houses, the estate was built with modern ideals and innovative techniques. Garchey waste disposal systems, central heating, and even ‘walkways in the sky,’ connecting the high-rise blocks, were all marvels of that era. The estate was designed to provide housing for 1,400 families, each one with its own spacious flat or home. But things took a turn for the worse. As the decades rolled on, crime began to creep in, turning the ‘walkways in the sky’ into escape routes for criminals, the once safe playgrounds becoming unsafe due to broken glass, and the flower beds and seating areas falling victim to vandalism. The 1980s brought safety initiatives, but these did little to stem the tide of decline. By the 1990s, Chalk Hill Estate became a hotbed of drugs and gang violence. But the estate was not destined to be forgotten. In the late 1990s, the old buildings were demolished and replaced with new low-rise housing. The new estate was built with a focus on security, but the problems persisted, and the area retained its notoriety for crime. Despite the challenges, Chalk Hill Estate has seen some signs of improvement. The opening of Chalkhill Primary School and a local cafe called The Lounge, which was unexpectedly voted the best restaurant in London in 2018, are small victories in the ongoing renewal of the area.
