Millions gather here annually. Why is Chaitya Bhumi such a revered place? It’s more than just a monument. It is the cremation place of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He was the architect of the Indian Constitution and revived Buddhism in India.

Chaitya Bhoomi is a Buddhist chaitya. It is located beside Dadar Chowpatty beach in Mumbai. Followers visit in millions on his death anniversary. This day is called Mahaparinirvan Diwas. It falls on December 6th.

Every year on December 6th, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra pays tribute. The Governor and many other politicians also pay their respects. Even the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has visited Chaitya Bhoomi.

The Government of Maharashtra recognizes its importance. It has been graded an A-class tourism and pilgrimage site. Chaitya Bhoomi hosts a memorial to Ambedkar.

Let’s talk about the structure of Chaitya Bhoomi. It is square with a small dome. The structure has a ground and mezzanine floor. Inside, a circular wall stands about 1.5 meters high. Within this circle are placed the bust of Ambedkar and a statue of Gautam Buddha. Marble flooring furnishes the space.

The circular wall has two entrances. The mezzanine floor holds a Stupa. It also provides a resting place for Bhikkhus. The main entrance gate mirrors the Sanchi Stupa gate. Inside, a replica of the Ashoka Pillar stands.

Meerabai Yashvant Ambedkar inaugurated Chaitya Bhoomi. She was B. R. Ambedkar’s daughter-in-law. The inauguration was on December 5, 1971. The relics of Ambedkar are enshrined here. In 2012, the government approved a memorial construction. It transferred Indu Mills land to the Maharashtra Government.

Ambedkar’s death anniversary is a significant event. It is observed as Mahaparinirvan Din. Millions of people from across India come to Chaitya Bhoomi. They pay homage to him.

Before it became Chaitya Bhoomi in 1966, it was called “Bhim Chowpatty”. The Buddhist Society of India laid the foundation stone. It was on Ambedkar’s 75th birth anniversary. Many prominent leaders attended the inauguration. A 42-ft-high stupa was constructed in 1968.

The Bharatiya Bauddha Mahasabha played a crucial role. It helped establish Chaitya Bhoomi. The aim was to introduce a distinct cultural discourse. This was especially for recently converted Buddhists.

Chaitya Bhoomi stands as a testament. It embodies Ambedkar’s vision of equality and justice. It inspires movements across caste and religious lines. The memorial is also a space for learning. Visitors discover India’s social history and Ambedkar’s transformative ideas. It is more than a pilgrimage site. It is a beacon of hope.
