Deep within the heart of Chafford Hundred, something remarkable awaits us here at Chafford Gorges Visitor Centre. This isn’t just a park. It’s a doorway to a world of dramatic history. It shows changes in climate. It gives sea-level insights.
Chafford Gorges Nature Discovery Park offers 200 acres of green space. It is for wildlife. It is for the people of Chafford Hundred.
This nature park was created within disused quarries. The Chafford Hundred housing development was built around the edges. From the 18th century to the end of the 1950s, this area was quarried for brickearth. It was used to make bricks, gravel and chalk. Flint was a side product. This produced lime for mortar, whitewash and cement.
The spacious visitor centre opened in 2006. It overlooks Warren Gorge. Warren Gorge is the largest of the three gorges.
Here, you will find five main areas in the nature park. Warren Gorge is the largest gorge. At its base, there are meadows and lakes. These are habitats for chalk-loving plants. You might see kingfishers, house martins and orchids.
Lion Gorge features a large lake. It contains tench, rudd, pike and bream. Four different bat species live here. Remember, all dogs must be on a lead in Lion Gorge.
Grays Gorge contains nine orchid species and other wildflowers. Reptiles live here. You might see adders, slow worms and grass snakes. Many birds, butterflies, bees and beetles also call this gorge home.
Mill Wood is an ancient woodland. It supports a range of wildlife. Wouldham Cliffs form the backbone of the nature park. They offer views over Lion Gorge. Butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies inhabit this area in summer.
Much of the area is formed from chalk. It was deposited from 97 to 65 million years ago. This chalk formed at the bottom of a tropical sea. The sea was about 300 metres higher than today. The sea retreated. This allowed erosion of the resulting land surface. A shallower sea was re-established 60 million years ago. Thanet Sand was deposited then. Visitors can walk a geology trail. Leaflets are available from the visitor centre.
The visitor centre has a café and a gift shop. There are wheelchair-accessible toilets. Baby changing facilities and free car parking are available.
Chafford Gorges Nature Park is operated by Essex Wildlife Trust. The centre is being repurposed for education. The aim is to meet charitable objectives effectively. It is expected to be fully operational in 2024.
Here at Chafford Gorges Visitor Centre, you can explore four nature trails. Detailed maps and interpretation boards guide you. They reveal the site’s hidden gems and rich history. Please note that there will be restricted access in some places. Follow the signed diversions.
