Imagine a wealthy merchant from the 18th century. He stands right where you stand now. He dreams of piping fresh water to his palace. This is the story of the Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica.

This fountain stands as a testament to Lisbon’s history. It also shows one man’s ambition. The Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica is more than just a water source. It is a landmark with a story.

In the late 1700s, Gérrard Devisme a wealthy businessman sought to bring water to his palace. He discovered water sources. He wanted to channel them privately. However the authorities intervened.

The Junta de Administração das Fábricas do Reino e Obra das Águas Livres stopped his initial plans in 1784. But Devisme was persistent. He struck a deal. He would build a public fountain. In exchange, he could also channel water to his palace.

Queen Maria authorized the project in August 1784. There was a condition. Devisme had to connect his system to the Aqueduto das Águas Livres. He also had to construct a new arch at his own expense. Thus the Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica was born.

After its completion the fountain did not immediately flow. It stood dry for three years. Finally in March 1787 a royal decree granted it water rights. The Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica received an allocation from the Aqueduto das Águas Livres. However it had a lower priority. It would only receive water if the main network had enough.

Any surplus water flowed to Devisme. Later it went to the Marquês de Abrantes and Infanta D. Isabel Maria. The fountain became integrated into the walls of the estate.

Look closely. The Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica features two dolphins. They act as spouts. A single tank sits below. Above the fountain is an obelisk. Two urns flank it.

The Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica stands on the Estrada de Benfica. The fountain is a creation of Gérrard Devisme. He was a prominent figure in the Brazilwood trade.

Today the Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica remains a historical landmark. It reminds us of Lisbon’s intricate water systems. It also reflects the ambitions of its residents. Take a moment to appreciate this blend of public service and private gain. The Chafariz de São Domingos de Benfica is a symbol of Lisbon’s rich history.
