Embedded in Rua da Junqueira’s history is the Chafariz da Junqueira. It is also known as Chafariz da Cordoaria. This fountain offers more than just refreshment. It tells a story of Lisbon’s past and architectural evolution.

The Chafariz da Junqueira was built in 1821. The design is attributed to architect Honorato José Correia de Macedo e Sá. Water first flowed from it in 1822.

Initially, the fountain was fed by a water mine. This mine was located in Alto de Santo Amaro. By 1838, a new water source was needed. It came from the vicinity of Rio Seco.

Notice the fountain’s robust appearance. It is integrated into the surrounding urban arrangement. This was designed by architect Raul Lino. Lino connected the fountain’s centrality with curved wall panels. These panels are decorated with tile ashlars. Stone benches are attached to them.

The main body of the Chafariz da Junqueira is made of lioz stone. It features two overlapping frames in the center. Pilasters frame these. The inscription on the upper frame reads “AGOAS LIVRES / ANNO DE 1821”. This translates to “Free Waters / Year of 1821”.

Above the frames, there is an elaborate pediment. It is defined by heavy fins and volutes. The coat of arms of Portugal sits at the central top. It shows the national shield on a crowned armillary sphere.

The Chafariz da Junqueira includes a water chest. There is also a tank with a cut-out plan. This tank receives water from two spouts.

Colorful tiles adorn the guard wall. Benches invite passersby to rest. The armillary sphere with royal arms is a prominent feature. The Chafariz da Junqueira stands as a testament to Lisbon’s history. It also highlights architectural design. Take a moment to appreciate this historic fountain. Think about the many stories it could tell.
