Did Queen Maria II ever imagine her birthday gift to the people would still be flowing centuries later? Right here, before you, stands the Chafariz da Boa Hora. It’s not just a fountain. It’s a testament to royal generosity and community spirit. Chafariz da Boa Hora humbly serves as a reminder of a time when water access was a precious gift. The story of the Chafariz da Boa Hora begins with the Augustinian friars of the Convento da Boa Hora. They received water from the Sacota and Torre do Relógio mines on royal lands. But in 1834, male religious orders were dissolved. The local parish, Ajuda, saw an opportunity. They petitioned Queen Maria II to use the now-available water for a public fountain. The Queen graciously agreed. This was to be her birthday gift to the people. But constructing Chafariz da Boa Hora wasn’t straightforward. The convent had been divided between the 17th Infantry Regiment and a tenant named António Mota. Mota had part of the old fence and a contract giving him the water rights for the local washerwomen. Despite these hurdles, Chafariz da Boa Hora was inaugurated on the Queen’s birthday, April 4, 1838. A regal gesture turned into a public good. However, new challenges emerged. The Infantry Regiment overused the water during dry periods. This often left Chafariz da Boa Hora dry, defeating its purpose. In 1850, royal architect Possidónio da Silva proposed a solution. The regiment should allow public access to the old convent fountain during droughts. This compromise ensured a more equitable distribution of this precious resource. So, the Chafariz da Boa Hora, a gift from a queen, became a symbol of community resilience. Look closely at the inscription. It details the Queen’s gift and the year of the fountain’s construction, 1838. The Chafariz da Boa Hora stands as a tribute to Queen Maria’s generosity and a testament to the community’s determination.
