Gazing upon Cezeri Kasımpasa Camii, one might initially overlook its historical depth. This mosque, nestled in Istanbul’s Cagaloglu district, stands at the intersection of Nuruosmaniye Caddesi and Babıali Caddesi. Cezeri Kasımpasa Camii faces Cagaloglu Square. This square is also home to the fountain of Grand Vizier Mahmut Nedim Pasa. The original Cezeri Kasımpasa Camii, commissioned by Cezeri Kasım Paşa, met a fiery end. It was later rebuilt in a superior style by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1868. The minaret, once adorned with a crescent moon finial shaped like a sycamore leaf, fell into disrepair by 1957. Abandoned until 1987, the mosque underwent extensive renovations and now stands revitalized. Cezeri Kasım Paşa, the mosque’s namesake, served as a vizier during the reign of Yavuz Sultan Selim. Known as Koca Kasım Safi Şelebi Paşa, his nickname “Cezeri” derives from his origins in Cizre, formerly known as El Cezire. He held prominent positions, including Defterdar and Şehir tuğlu vezir. He was also a patron of the renowned poet İbni Cezeri, raising him as his adopted son. İbni Cezeri’s famous work “Mukaddime” adds to the rich tapestry of this era. Cezeri Kasım Paşa’s contributions extended beyond Istanbul. He also commissioned a madrasa and a bathhouse in Bursa, further demonstrating his commitment to education and public welfare. Cezeri Kasımpasa Camii itself occupies an irregularly shaped quadrilateral plot. Its current form bears no resemblance to the original structure. Due to the sloping terrain of Cagaloglu Square, the prayer area is located on the upper floor. The mosque consists of a basement and two upper levels, with shops occupying the lower floor. The main prayer hall on the upper floor is crowned by a single dome, obscured from the front view. The upper floor cantilevers over the street, supported by exterior columns. These columns frame shop windows on the ground level and eight round windows on the upper level. The reinforced concrete minaret, proportionally tall, rises from the southwest corner and features a single balcony. The interior of Cezeri Kasımpasa Camii holds remarkable artistic treasures. The tiles adorning the mihrab and minbar showcase intricate craftsmanship. One particular tile panel depicts the Kaaba, a rarity in Ottoman Turkish tile art. Located above the left window of the mihrab, this panel, dated March 1726, was donated by İznikli Mehmed, son of Osman. The realistic depiction of the Kaaba, including surrounding buildings, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of perspective. This panel stands as a testament to the flourishing tile art of the time.
