Cezer-i Kasım Cami

Why did the Cezer-i Kasım Paşa Cami in Istanbul earn the nickname “Akarçeşme Mosque”? We’re standing before this fascinating structure, a testament to a life intertwined with Ottoman history. The original Cezer-i Kasım Paşa Cami met an unfortunate end. It was demolished in 1957. A new mosque, designed to evoke the spirit of the original wooden structure, now stands in its place. The mosque’s namesake, Kasım Paşa, boasts a colorful past. He held the esteemed positions of Chief Treasurer, Defterdar (Minister of Finance), and even Vizier. This mosque was just one part of his legacy. He also commissioned a madrasa and a primary school alongside the original mosque. He even had another mosque in Istanbul, located in Cağaloğlu. This other mosque underwent renovations in 1866. In the original Cezer-i Kasım Paşa Cami, intricate tilework adorned the mihrab and minbar. A particularly noteworthy piece, a panel depicting the Kaaba in Mecca, stood out. Donated in March 1726, this panel is a rare example of its kind in Ottoman Turkish tile art. The attention to detail, including surrounding buildings and a sense of perspective, showcases a remarkable artistic skill. The tiles in the mihrab’s muqarnas also date back to March 1726, though other sections feature older tilework. Kasım Paşa’s influence wasn’t confined to Istanbul. He also had a madrasa and a hamam in Bursa, and it is said he left charitable works in Thessaloniki. A small mosque in Thessaloniki, originally the Hagios Demetrios Church, was converted into the Kasım Paşa Mosque in 1492. Though destroyed by fire in 1918 and later restored as a church, its connection to Kasım Paşa adds another layer to his complex history.
