“Have you ever wondered how education can transform a community?” I ask, gesturing towards the CEU – Centro de Educação Unificado. Here in São Paulo, these centers are more than just schools. They’re vibrant hubs of community life. The CEU – Centro de Educação Unificado project began in 2001 under Mayor Marta Suplicy. It was a response to community requests through participatory budgeting. The initial vision was inspired by the Escola Parque project from the mid-20th century. This project aimed to make schools central to community life, a meeting place where education, sports, and culture could intertwine. Today, there are 46 CEUs across São Paulo. They serve over 120,000 students and countless community members. Each CEU houses a range of educational facilities. There’s a Centro de Educação Infantil (CEI) for ages 0-3, an Escola Municipal de Educação Infantil (EMEI) for ages 4-6, and an Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental (EMEF), which also offers adult education. Some CEUs even host UniCEU branches, offering distance and blended learning courses. But a CEU – Centro de Educação Unificado is much more than its classrooms. Inside, you’ll find libraries, computer labs, and theaters that double as cinemas. Outside, there are swimming pools, playgrounds, sports courts, and workshops. These spaces are designed to serve the entire community, not just students. They’re open on weekends, offering a vital resource for low-income families in the surrounding areas. The programming is diverse. There’s something for all ages, from sports and recreation to cultural events and technology access. Surveys conducted with the Fundação Instituto de Administração (FIA) have shown community satisfaction rates exceeding 90 percent. CEUs truly demonstrate how integrated public services can uplift communities and provide opportunities for everyone. The CEU – Centro de Educação Unificado has become a symbol of hope and opportunity in São Paulo. They empower individuals, strengthen families, and transform communities.
