“A very steep trek to a 1750m peak with excellent 360 degree views,” is what they say about Cerro Bella Vista. Are you ready to embark on a challenging yet rewarding ascent? Today we’ll conquer Cerro Bella Vista, a peak that promises breathtaking panoramic views.
Cerro Bella Vista is located near Bariloche. It stands at 1750 meters high. Cerro Bella Vista sits between Cerro Catedral and Cerro Goye.
Our adventure begins at Tambo Baez. We’ll initially follow the trail towards the Jakob Refuge. After about 20 minutes, we will veer onto the Cerro Bella Vista trail.
Be prepared for a physically demanding hike. The trail mostly ascends. We’ll traverse a beautiful beech forest. If you’re here in spring, look out for the blossoming Amancay plants along the way. Their vibrant colors add to the beauty.
We’ll pause in the forest for a picnic. Take this opportunity to capture photos and regain your strength for the summit. Leaving the beech trees behind, we’ll continue along the summit ridge for about 40 minutes. The views of the lakes and mountains become increasingly spectacular.
From the summit of Cerro Bella Vista, you might even spot condors soaring. It is possible to extend our trek along the ridge to Cerro Goye. You could descend to Colonia Suiza for a well-deserved handcrafted beer.
Remember to bring appropriate gear for the hike. This includes hiking clothing and sturdy shoes. Especially in spring, good trekking shoes are essential due to potential snow. Pack a backpack, waterproof jacket, and a sunhat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also crucial. Bring plenty of water and any necessary toiletries. Telescopic hiking sticks can be helpful.
The ascent to Cerro Bella Vista is perfect for those who enjoy gaining altitude quickly. The trail passes through an old-growth forest of Coihue trees. You will see many native flowers. The Colihue canes may try to block our path. Keep an eye out for wild orchids near the trail between November and January.
As we ascend, the Coihue and Cypress trees give way to Lenga trees. We might spot Magellanic Woodpeckers. After a rest, we’ll continue through slopes filled with Amancay flowers. The views of Lago Moreno will start to captivate us. Entering the high Andean terrain, we can appreciate the vastness of the Cordillera. The complex system of lakes that characterize this region is special.
At the summit ridge, we’ll find a comfortable spot for lunch. Here we often enjoy watching condors and black vultures soaring close by. After lunch, the summit awaits. It’s about forty minutes further ascent over rocky terrain. The summit offers 360-degree views of the mountains and valleys around Bariloche.
As you descend, you can fully enjoy the spectacular views. Once at the mountain’s base, consider ending the day with a craft beer from Berlina.
