Ever wondered what a beer garden becomes when the brewery closes? Look around you. This is Cereshaven, a vibrant park built on the grounds of the former Ceres Brewery. Cereshaven is more than just a green space. It’s a testament to Aarhus’s ability to transform its industrial past into a thriving present. The Ceres Brewery, founded in 1856, was once a bustling hub, producing beer and soft drinks for over a century. In 2008, Royal Unibrew closed the brewery. This closure could have been a devastating blow to the area. Instead, it became an opportunity. The city of Aarhus saw the potential of this space. They rezoned the area and envisioned a new neighborhood that would blend residential and commercial spaces with the brewery’s historical legacy. Ceresbyen, or Ceres City, was born. The construction, which took place between 2008 and 2018, resulted in a diverse mix of apartments, businesses, and educational institutions. Two original 19th-century brewery buildings were preserved, anchoring the new development to its past. Parts of the brewery’s private garden were expanded and transformed into what you see today: Cereshaven. This green heart of Ceresbyen provides a tranquil escape for residents and visitors alike. Paths wind along the Aarhus River, connecting to the scenic Brabrandstien. Imagine the students from the nearby VIA University College strolling through the park, grabbing coffee at a local cafe, or simply enjoying the open space.
