CeresByen wasn’t always filled with modern apartments and a bustling campus. For over 150 years the Ceres Brewery stood proudly here. The city council had a vision. They wanted to create a new neighbourhood a mixed residential and commercial area. Arkitema Architects won the design competition. Construction began in 2013. The project was ambitious. CeresByen was planned to house 2000 residents and 5000 students. It was to be a modern area yet respecting the brewery’s history.
The first phase of CeresByen was completed in 2015. VIA University College opened its new campus. That same year the first residents moved into new apartment buildings. Ceres Corner quickly became a focal point. It’s where people meet where students study. It connects the old and the new.
Imagine the old brewery buildings. Some remain standing proud reminders of the past. They are now part of Ceres Plaza a cobblestone square at Ceres Corner. These historic structures contrast sharply with the modern architecture surrounding them. The architects cleverly incorporated timber cladding into the new buildings. This connects the past with the present.
This clever design is not just aesthetically pleasing. It also showcases Aarhus’s commitment to sustainability. The height of the buildings has been kept relatively low. This was done to respect the nearby Den Gamle By open-air museum. The underground car parks save precious space. Ceres Panorama a landmark highrise completed in 2016 is one of the city’s tallest structures.
