Picture this. You are standing before CEPA Son Canals a vibrant adult education center in Palma de Mallorca. This unassuming building holds a rich history. It wasn’t always a school.

CEPA Son Canals began life far differently. It started as a social-educational center for girls in the working-class Hostalets neighborhood. This was in the early 20th century. Wealthy women volunteered. They taught around 160 girls. The classes ranged from basic literacy to sewing. The building boasted a striking Modernist facade. It perfectly reflected the popular architectural style of the time.

After the Spanish Civil War the center’s purpose shifted. It served as an educational and recreational center for poor children. It was under the auspices of the Patronat Obrer. There was even a small theater where local amateur groups performed plays in Catalan. A chapel remained. It hosted religious services and events.

In 1958 it became the public school Colegio Pare Vives. It even offered free meals. This was thanks to Father Ventura. He arranged for food to be delivered from the Patronat Obrer’s economical kitchen. As part of post-war aid from the US students received a daily glass of powdered milk. Seminarians provided religious instruction on Saturday mornings.

Finally in 1986 the school became CEPA Son Canals. It was the first adult education center in the Balearic Islands. The name reflects the neighborhood’s origins. The name Son Canals refers to a 19th-century estate. A surprising fact. This area also housed the Balears Football Club’s field from 1923 to 1960. The field was situated between the streets Cardenal Despuig Safareig and Isidor Antillon. Only a small part of the field remains today it’s now a parking lot.

Today CEPA Son Canals continues its mission. It provides education and opportunities for adults. It has a strong focus on helping immigrants integrate. Courses are offered in various subjects including IT Catalan Spanish and English. The school also organizes cultural events workshops and festivals. It continues to be a vital part of the community. Its legacy spans over a century a testament to its adaptability and commitment to education. Isn’t that remarkable?
