In 1961, President Adolfo López Mateos inaugurated the Centro Hospitalario “20 de noviembre”. This marked the beginning of a new era in public healthcare. The Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre, as it’s known today, wasn’t always this grand institution. It began as part of a vision. A vision for a network of public hospitals and clinics spanning across Mexico City. This network, conceived in the 1960s, included six zone hospitals within the city and an impressive 48 clinics throughout its various boroughs. Many of these facilities are still serving the community today. The Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre itself started as a building purchased by the ISSSTE, originally intended to be the Hospital Fajer. By 1961, it had been transformed into the Centro Hospitalario 20 de Noviembre. The architects Enrique and Agustín Landa Verdugo skillfully adapted the existing unfinished structure to meet the hospital’s needs. Upon its inauguration, the hospital boasted 600 beds, state-of-the-art equipment, a childcare center, and a four-level parking garage. The Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre holds a special place in Mexican architectural history. It’s considered one of the 25 most significant works of Mexican architecture of the 20th century. Located near the Centro Urbano Presidente Alemán (CUPA), a housing complex commissioned by the then Directorate of Civil and Retirement Pensions (now ISSSTE), the hospital has witnessed the city’s growth and transformation. In 1994, reflecting its growth and evolution, the hospital underwent renovations and was renamed Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre. The hospital continued to achieve milestones in medical advancements. In 2005, the first radiosurgery for epilepsy in Mexico was performed here. Later, in 2015, the hospital embraced robotic surgery with the Da Vinci robot, performing its first robotic procedure. The Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre continues to push the boundaries of medical innovation. It has achieved significant recognition in the fields of transplants, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, and rehabilitation medicine. It even houses the country’s first Gynecological Urology Clinic within the ISSSTE network. Moreover, the hospital successfully reopened its Reproduction Biology service and is preparing to launch a linear accelerator-based neuroradiosurgery program. The hospital’s commitment extends beyond patient care to encompass teaching and research. This dedication is evident in its upcoming collaboration with the Pasteur Institute of France, the development of new subspecialties and postgraduate programs, and its increasing number of registered patents. The Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre is a testament to Mexico’s dedication to advancing healthcare.
