“A ripple of faith,” whispered a missionary in Buenos Aires in 1925, “can become a wave.” This ripple began with two German immigrants, Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, preaching in Buenos Aires in 1923. Their message resonated, creating a small but growing community. This fledgling community caught the attention of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In December 1925, Apostle Melvin J. Ballard arrived to dedicate South America for the preaching of the gospel, laying the foundation for what would become Centro Evangelístico Jesús Vive and many other congregations. Ballard prophesied that the growth would be slow, like an oak from an acorn. He also foresaw that the South American mission would become a power in the Church. Centro Evangelístico Jesús Vive stands as a testament to this prophecy. The early years saw slow but steady growth. The 1940s tested the resilience of the Argentine members. Foreign missionaries withdrew, leaving local members to lead branches and the mission organization. This period of local leadership proved invaluable. Growth accelerated again with the return of missionaries in 1946. The 1950s brought a building program. New meetinghouses arose to accommodate the expanding membership. The program also provided training opportunities for young men on building missions. In 1966, the first stake was created in Buenos Aires, with more to follow. This growth culminated in the dedication of the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple in 1986. Centro Evangelístico Jesús Vive, along with hundreds of other congregations, forms part of a vibrant community. They contribute to the rich religious tapestry of Argentina. The prophecy of Ballard, spoken decades ago, echoes in the strength and vitality of the Church here today. From a ripple of faith, a wave indeed.
