Could a mother’s love inspire the creation of a spiritual haven? At Centro Espírita Seara Fraterna, it did. This vibrant center, nestled in the Catete neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, has a history as rich as the city itself. Centro Espírita Seara Fraterna was born on New Year’s Day, 1954. A group of friends, all members of the Cristófilos Spiritist Center, gathered in Botafogo. They were inspired by a message from the spirit of Irmã Rita, mother of one of the founders, Edson Holmes. Irmã Rita not only suggested the name “Seara Fraterna” but also the auspicious opening day. The center’s initial home was on Voluntários da Pátria Street. It quickly became a hub for those seeking spiritual guidance. After a short time, Centro Espírita Seara Fraterna moved to Mena Barreto Street, where it thrived for a decade. Weekly mediumship meetings, public gatherings, and children’s evangelization filled its rooms. Innovative initiatives like the “Quilo Campaign” and “Fraternal Visits” began here, showcasing the center’s commitment to social good. The journey wasn’t over. Centro Espírita Seara Fraterna eventually settled at its current location at 23 Rua Bento Lisboa in Catete in July 1972. At first, only the upper floor was rented, sharing the building with a tailor shop below. Ten years later, the entire building was purchased. This milestone marked a turning point in the center’s history. 1982 also saw the introduction of ESDE, the Systematized Study of Spiritist Doctrine, a program that welcomes newcomers and deepens understanding. Today, Centro Espírita Seara Fraterna serves approximately 2000 people. The center provides a wide range of public lectures and activities throughout the week. From Monday night discussions on the Lord’s Prayer to Saturday night explorations of “Angels and Demons,” there’s a topic to inspire everyone. Centro Espírita Seara Fraterna remains a beacon of hope and spiritual learning in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a place where the past and the present intertwine, where community thrives, and where the spirit of Irmã Rita’s message continues to resonate.
