The Centro Espírita Maria Angélica began as a small group in 1989. The Grupo de Estudos Espíritas Irmã Maria Angélica GEEIMA focused on Spiritist teachings. They offered courses and public lectures. They even started a vital outreach program. They distributed warm meals to the homeless.
Their humble beginnings were in a repurposed auditorium. It was part of the Escola Municipal República da Colômbia. They stayed there for two years. Their growth was remarkable. Guided by the spiritual direction of Irmã Maria Angélica. They knew they’d need a larger space soon.
By 1991 the GEEIMA moved. They found a new home thanks to the Barra Regional Administration. It was on Avenida Ayrton Senna. But even this was temporary. Their work continued to expand. They served more people. They offered more classes and activities.
A year later the group outgrew the space again. They moved to a house on Rua Ernesto Pinheiro. Their services were now diverse and far-reaching. They reached out to almost 120 families in need.
The need for a permanent home became clear. Two years of fundraising efforts followed. Riffs bazaars and community meals helped. Generous anonymous donations fueled their dream.
Finally in February 1997 the Centro Espírita Maria Angélica CEMA opened its doors. This building became their own. It was a place for everyone. A testament to their dedication.
