“Have you ever heard of a place built on faith, brick by brick, fueled by a simple yet profound desire to illuminate the truth?” We stand before Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade, a beacon of Spiritism nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Its story, like the city itself, is one of resilience, expansion, and a deep connection to the spiritual realm. Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade first opened its doors on September 10, 1934, thanks to the vision of Polycarpo Guilherme. Its humble beginnings in his residence at Rua 9, number 64, soon blossomed into a larger space at Avenida 2, number 745. This marked the first step in a journey that would see the Centro grow and evolve, touching countless lives along the way. The inauguration of a new building at the same Avenida 2 address in 1947 solidified Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade’s presence in the community. This expansion also included the Albergue Noturno, a night shelter, showcasing the center’s commitment to social service alongside its spiritual mission. The spirit of growth continued to drive the Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade forward. In 1980, a new chapter began with the “Campanha Tudo Serve” (Everything Serves Campaign), spearheaded by Orlando Pedrosa. This campaign paved the way for an even grander vision, culminating in the inauguration of a new headquarters in October 1987. This new space not only housed the Centro but also the Albergue Noturno, strengthening the bond between spiritual growth and social responsibility. Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade played a vital role in the development and operation of the shelter. This commitment to serving those in need is a testament to the core values of Spiritism. In 2013, the Departamento Assistencial transformed into the Instituto Viver & Conviver, an independent non-profit organization. Though the Instituto eventually separated from the Centro in 2015, the legacy of social service remains a vital part of the Centro’s story. Today, Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade continues to shine its light. It offers a diverse range of activities, from lectures and spiritual healing sessions to in-depth studies of Spiritist literature. The center also fosters community through fraternal gatherings and conversations. It has even revitalized its social assistance department, continuing the tradition of service that has been a cornerstone of its existence since its inception. As you stand here, consider the journey of this spiritual haven. From its humble beginnings to its current vibrant state, Centro Espírita Luz e Verdade exemplifies the power of faith and community to create positive change. It stands as a testament to the enduring human need to connect with something greater than ourselves and to find solace and understanding in the world around us.
