“Is it possible,” a young architecture student pondered aloud, staring up at the Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda, “for a building to whisper secrets of construction?” Her professor smiled. “The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda doesn’t whisper, my dear. It roars with knowledge.” The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda, established in 2002 by engineer Patricio Placencia, is more than just a building. It’s the heart of Ecuador’s structural research, particularly when it comes to housing. Born from a collaboration between BID-Fundacyt-EPN, the center filled a void. There was a critical need for a dedicated space to conduct experimental research in structural engineering. The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda answered this call. The very first project undertaken within its walls was the validation of the “Casa Lista” construction system. This system, developed by Mutualista Pichincha, benefited greatly from the center’s expertise. The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda quickly became a vital resource. The center boasts a unique feature. It has a loading slab and reaction walls. This setup allows for full-scale testing of both conventional and unconventional construction systems, even up to two stories high. This practical approach makes the Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda an invaluable asset for the Ecuadorian construction industry. The center actively contributes to teaching, research, external services, and community engagement. It provides consulting and laboratory services for physical and mechanical analysis. This analysis helps improve different structural elements and construction methods. The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda’s work directly impacts the Ecuadorian National Construction Standard (NEC). The NEC, in its chapter on housing (NEC-SE-VIVIENDA), stipulates that unique or patented construction systems must be approved by a special committee. These systems also require a technical report from the Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda. This report assesses the performance of the construction system and ensures compliance with NEC provisions. The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda remains a beacon of innovation. It is striving to become a national leader in structural research. The center also aims to empower future engineers by offering lectures, laboratory practices, and thesis testing opportunities. The Centro de Investigación de la Vivienda is a testament to Ecuador’s commitment to safer, more resilient housing.
