Within the vibrant heart of Quito, a remarkable structure stands as a testament to Ecuador’s progress and vision. The Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario, also known as the Quito Metropolitan Convention Center, isn’t just a building. It’s a hub of innovation, culture, and global exchange. The Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario’s story began on the grounds of the old Mariscal Sucre Airport. Imagine the transformation. From a place of arrivals and departures to a destination for conferences, exhibitions, and grand events. In 2015, the design for this impressive structure was unveiled, a generous donation from Aecon Group Inc. The city council approved the project, and construction commenced in April 2017. By October of that year, the Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario was already 45% complete, a testament to the dedication and efficiency of the project team. The grand opening took place in September 2018, marked by the vibrant Expoflor Ecuador event. Over 600 varieties of flowers, from roses to orchids, filled the halls, a fitting tribute to Ecuador’s rich biodiversity. The Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario boasts over 16,400 square meters of space, capable of accommodating over 10,000 people. The largest room alone can hold an audience of 4,000, making it an ideal venue for large-scale gatherings. The Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario has hosted a variety of events, from international congresses to flower exhibitions. It aims to establish Quito as a premier destination for global events. Future plans for the complex are even more ambitious, including a fairground, offices, hotels, a cultural center, and even a botanical garden. The original airport tower is also slated for restoration, preserving a piece of Quito’s history. The Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario is more than just a convention center. It’s a symbol of Quito’s growth and its commitment to a brighter future.
