Whispers of vanished souls linger at the Centro Clandestino de Detención El Olimpo. This former tram terminal, nestled in Vélez Sarsfield, became a chilling symbol of Argentina’s dark past. The Centro Clandestino de Detención El Olimpo operated for a mere five months, from August 1978 to January 1979. Yet, in that short time, it held captive around 700 individuals. Only 50 survived. Originally a bustling hub connecting the city center to the western suburbs, El Olimpo’s transformation began in early 1978. The military, under the guise of the Federal Police’s Motor Division, repurposed the space. The expansive garages were gutted, creating a covered internal courtyard. Cells, offices, and chillingly, torture chambers known as “operating rooms,” were constructed. The once vibrant terminal became a place of unspeakable horrors. Prisoners, often blindfolded, were brought in under the cover of darkness. They arrived in unmarked cars or army trucks, their identities erased, replaced by assigned letters and numbers. El Olimpo was part of a network of clandestine detention centers, linked to the chilling “ABO” circuit. This network included “Club Atlético” and “El Banco,” funneling victims through a system designed to break their spirit. Even the name, El Olimpo, drips with cruel irony. A sign at the entrance mockingly declared, “Welcome to the Olympus of the Gods. Signed: The Centurions.” The torturers, in their twisted minds, saw themselves as deities, deciding the fate of mere mortals. The echoes of suffering still resonate within these walls. After the dictatorship’s fall, the building briefly reverted to the Federal Police, serving as a vehicle verification center. The ghosts of the past, however, could not be erased. The site was later declared a historical landmark and transferred to the city government. It now stands as a chilling reminder, a memorial to the victims, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The Centro Clandestino de Detención El Olimpo serves as a solemn warning, a place where silence speaks volumes, and memory refuses to be silenced.
