“Ever wonder what lies behind these walls?” I ask. We are standing before the Centre Tignous d’Art Contemporain. It is a unique space dedicated to contemporary art.
This building combines heritage with modern architecture. The Centre Tignous offers about 200 square metres for artistic creation. Architect Bernard Desmoulin renovated the 19th-century main house. He added a contemporary extension. This transformation gives the venue an innovative image.
The Centre Tignous d’Art Contemporain opened in October 2013. In September 2017, it was renamed to honour Tignous. He was a Montreuil cartoonist killed in the Charlie Hebdo attack on January 15, 2015.
The center is accessible through its artistic program. It serves as a meeting and exchange space. The Centre Tignous hosts four group exhibitions each year. These shows focus on current artistic creation. Invited curators design the group exhibitions. They can be part of national and European events. Examples are the Mois de la Photo and Nuit Blanche.
The artistic direction addresses contemporary societal issues. It questions important current topics in art. This is achieved through thematic exhibitions. These exhibitions encourage debates and engagement with the artworks.
Each group exhibition includes cultural events. These offer varied formats like discussions and concerts. There are also meetings with the public.
Mediation is central to the art center’s project. Tailored mediation engages the public. It creates opportunities to encounter contemporary creation. All audiences are welcome, especially those unfamiliar with art. The center provides guided tours and artist meetings. There are also talks and debates.
The mediation is designed for all age groups. This includes young people, adults, and seniors. It also considers the specific needs of audiences. This includes people with disabilities. Mediation tools like activity books enhance visits.
In addition to visits, there are art workshops. These workshops offer an introduction to artistic creation. Artists and mediators lead the workshops.
Since 2013, the Centre Tignous d’Art Contemporain has hosted artists. They participate in creation and experimentation residencies for six months.
The center supports innovative and experimental expressions. These expressions engage with the Montreuil area and its communities. Residencies support contemporary visual arts creation. This includes supporting the production of artworks. The project culminates in an exhibition in the center’s residency space.
An on-site studio provides a workspace. It allows artists to meet and interact with the public. Artists-in-residence offer different activities. These include open studio days and workshops. They invite the public to engage with contemporary creation.
