“Three towers piercing the Parisian sky. That’s the Centre Pierre Mendès France. Can you believe it?”

The Centre Pierre Mendès France Faculté Panthéon-Sorbonne stands before you. A striking example of Brutalist architecture. It’s a testament to post-68 university expansion and urban renewal. This wasn’t always a university building. Before 1971 this site held a humble paving stone depot. A far cry from the impressive structure that now houses thousands of students.

Imagine the scene in November 1970. Olivier Guichard the Minister of National Education decided on a new university center. He chose this triangular plot of land. A challenging space. Michel Andrault and Pierre Parat were the chosen architects. Their design was bold. A high-rise building. Three towers of unequal heights. Tower A nine stories. Tower B sixteen. Tower C a towering twenty-two.

Construction lasted two years. It opened in autumn 1973 as the Centre Multidisciplinaire de Tolbiac. It received its current name in 1983. It honored the prominent French politician Pierre Mendès France. The architects cleverly used a central reinforced concrete core. This supported the unique cubic modules. These modules house offices and classrooms. The amphitheaters are cleverly positioned below ground. They create a striking base.

Notice the exposed concrete. The smoked glass. The brick. Even the pebbles. This Brutalist aesthetic is striking. It’s softened by the moving landscape at the base of the building. This was a 1% artistic addition. Bernard Alleaume and Yvette Vincent-Alleaume created it. The work animates the spaces overlooking the Rue de Tolbiac. The Centre Pierre Mendès France is more than just a building. It’s a dynamic space for learning.

Today approximately 6000 students study here. They study humanities economics and management. The Centre Pierre Mendès France has a rich history. It embodies the spirit of urban renewal and academic progress. The unique design stands as a symbol of innovation. The building itself tells a story. It is a story of vision ambition and remarkable architectural achievement. It’s a story that continues to unfold every day within its walls. The Centre Pierre Mendès France continues to shape the future of its students. It continues to enrich the Parisian landscape.
