The square Jean XXIII was created around 1844. It was initially named square de l’Archevêché. This was because of its proximity to the old Archbishopric. In 1970, it was renamed square Jean XXIII. It covers a little over one hectare. It is located on the Ile de la Cité near the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral.
The area of the square Jean XXIII was once wasteland. This was in the 13th century. It was later developed into a garden. It was also known as Motte aux Papelards or simply Le Terrain.
In 1911, the portion of the quai de l’Archevêché was added. It stretches from the pont de l’Archevêché to the pont au Double. It became part of the square de l’Archevêché.
Admire the bronze statue of Jean-Paul II. It was gifted by the Russian sculptor Zourab Tsereteli. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of the city, inaugurated it in 2014.
