Did you know Central Village Park has been a neighborhood hub since the 1970s? Today, we celebrate this cornerstone of St. Paul’s historic Rondo neighborhood. This area was once the heart of the city’s African American community.
Central Village Park is aptly named. Uninterrupted trails extend from it into the surrounding neighborhood. These trails cover an area roughly equal to four square blocks. People south of I-94 can easily access the park. A footbridge connects to the park’s friendly trails.
In 2024, Central Village Park’s trail network will be resurfaced. A new site survey will also be completed. Concept plans were adopted for park developments in 2023. In 2022, Trust for Public Land helped fund community-designed murals. They also supported other temporary art installations at the park. Lighting was installed at the park in 2020.
The City of Saint Paul is partnering with various organizations. These include Trust for Public Land and Springboard for the Arts. They are also working with the Summit-University Planning Council and community members. The goal is to develop a long-range plan for Central Village Park. This plan will guide future improvements in and around the park.
Community members have shared great ideas for the park. These address safety, programming, maintenance, and general design. Their input has been instrumental in shaping the preliminary concept.
Central Village Park offers many ways to stay active or relax. It boasts open green space and playground equipment. You will also find two enclosed tennis courts here. Amenities include a BBQ grill, benches, and a horseshoe ring. There is also a picnic area.
In fact, an obscure park anniversary took place here recently. Mizz Mercedez and her crew set up shop. They brought speakers and 12-foot-long ropes. They began a sacred rite for St. Paul’s Black community. It was double dutch! After a year of building community, the jump rope craft is seeing a moment on the streets.
Central Village Park is more than just a park. It’s a place where community thrives. It’s a place where memories are made. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit. As we continue to shape its future, let’s remember its rich history. Let’s celebrate its present. Let’s look forward to its vibrant future.
