“Celebrating 125 Years of Methodism” is more than just a theme. It’s the living heartbeat of Central United Methodist Church. Founded on March 5, 1899, this church is the first Protestant church in the Philippines. It stands proudly on T.M. Kalaw Street in Ermita Manila.
Originally named Central Methodist Episcopal Church, it emerged during the American Occupation. Some even called it “The American Church” or the first “English-speaking Church”. Imagine the cultural exchange happening within these walls.
The church’s history is intertwined with Knox United Methodist Church. This connection arose from Filipino-American ties after the surrender of Manila in 1898. The first Protestant worship service occurred on August 28, 1898. Rev. George C. Stull led the service. American soldiers and Filipino civilians attended together.
During the Philippine–American War, the congregation divided. The American members moved their services to the YMCA in 1899. Central UMC’s first chapel opened on December 23, 1901. A stone structure replaced it in November 1906. By 1932, it became a cathedral.
The Liberation of Manila in 1945 brought devastation. Fighting between Filipino and American troops against Japanese forces severely damaged Central UMC. The congregation reunited with Knox UMC until 1949. Central UMC was then rebuilt on its original site. The Gothic Revival architecture reminds us of its resilience. Juan Arellano originally designed the church.
Over time, Central UMC’s membership shifted. It transformed from mainly American to a mix of Filipino and American people. Its location is on T.M. Kalaw Avenue near Taft Avenue. It stands across from Plaza Olivia Salamanca.
Central United Methodist Church has seen prominent figures within its congregation. José Abad Santos, a former Chief Justice and acting President, was a member. Jorge Bocobo, a former Justice of the Supreme Court, also worshipped here.
Today, Central United Methodist Church continues its mission. It embraces its history while looking toward the future. The church celebrated its 125th anniversary in March 2024. Lawyer Felipe L. Gozon of GMA Network Inc. delivered the spiritual message.
The church actively engages in community outreach. They organize medical and dental missions. They celebrate International Women’s Day with prominent guest speakers. A multi-purpose building is under construction adding space for ministerial work. This includes feeding and sheltering street people. The building will also provide a venue for job applicants and OFWs. It will also serve as a facility for medical missions.
Central United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community. Its history is woven into the fabric of Manila. As you stand here, remember the stories of those who came before. They shaped this church into what it is today.
