Central Park in Harold Hill isn’t just a park. It’s a vibrant hub, a green lung in the heart of the community. Central Park has a history stretching back to 1947, marked by constant evolution. Initially designed as part of the Harold Hill estate, it was gradually brought to life in the 1950s. By 1966, Central Park boasted an 18-hole miniature golf course, sports fields, and tennis courts, all for a sum of £10,450. Central Park even had a paddling pool at one time. Central Park covers over 17 hectares and offers an array of activities. From a skate park and BMX pump track to a Parkour area and a children’s playground, there’s something for everyone. In 2019, Central Park received the prestigious Gold award for ‘Large Park of the Year’ from London in Bloom, a testament to its beauty and upkeep. The park is a haven for wildlife. The conservation grasslands support numerous butterfly species, and fallow deer from neighboring parks are frequent visitors. Paine’s Brook, a tributary of the Ingrebourne River, winds through Central Park, adding to the park’s natural charm. Look around you and imagine the woods teeming with bluebells in the spring. The woods, known locally as Sage Wood and Long Wood, flank the park’s western side. These woods are remnants of the ancient Forest of Waltham, a medieval forest that once covered a large swathe of Essex. Central Park underwent a major transformation in 2014/15, thanks to funding from Havering Council and Veolia North Thames Trust. The redevelopment included a new play area, upgraded sports facilities, a kiosk with a picnic area, and enhanced landscaping. The improvements have had a positive impact on local wildlife, leading to an increase in insect and bird populations, and even encouraging mammals like hedgehogs and bats. If you’re here in summer, walk through the long grass. You might spot crickets, grasshoppers, bees, and butterflies. If you are lucky, maybe even a thrush. Central Park is easily accessible by bus routes 256 and 174, and there’s free parking available at the Petersfield Avenue car park. The park is open from 8am to dusk.
