Perhaps Central Jakarta seems like any other administrative city. Yet it holds a unique position in Indonesia. Central Jakarta is not just one of Jakarta’s five administrative cities. It is also the de facto capital city of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta.

In fact, Central Jakarta is the heart of it all. It serves as both the administrative and political center for Jakarta and Indonesia. The city is home to important landmarks. Hotel Indonesia is one such landmark. Many large international hotels are here too.

Let’s take a closer look at Central Jakarta. It is the smallest in area and population compared to Jakarta’s other administrative cities. Despite its size, it has a significant population. The mid-2023 estimate was 1103357 residents. This population comprises 553471 males and 549886 females.

Interestingly, Central Jakarta does not have a city council. Thus, it is not considered a proper municipality with self-governance. Instead, it operates under the administration of a mayor. Dhany Sukma currently holds this position. Chaidir is the Vice Mayor.

Central Jakarta is divided into eight districts. Each district has its own administrative center and urban villages known as kelurahan. Tanah Abang is one district with Kebon Melati as its administrative center. Menteng is another district with Menteng as its center. Senen, Johar Baru, and Cempaka Putih each have their own distinct character. Kemayoran is known for its progress. Sawah Besar and Gambir complete the list of Central Jakarta’s districts.

Did you know that Central Jakarta is densely populated? In mid-2023, it averaged almost 23000 residents per square kilometer. This makes it Jakarta’s most densely populated municipality. Johar Baru District is particularly dense. It reaches almost 60000 residents per square kilometer.

Economically, Central Jakarta plays a vital role. In 2007, its Gross Regional Domestic Product at current market prices was higher than other municipalities in Jakarta. Its GRDP at 2000 constant prices was also higher. This reflects its economic significance.

In the real estate sector, Jakarta’s Central Business District experienced growth. At the end of the first quarter of 2010, the occupancy rate was 80%. This was an increase from 78% in the first quarter of 2009. The amount of office space also increased significantly.

Central Jakarta also hosts several government agencies. The National Search and Rescue Agency has its head office in Kemayoran. The National Transportation Safety Committee is located in the Ministry of Transport Building.

So, as we stand here in Central Jakarta remember its importance. It is the administrative and political heart of Jakarta and Indonesia. Despite being the smallest, its high population density and strong economy contribute to Jakarta’s vibrancy. From its administrative districts to its government agencies, Central Jakarta is a dynamic hub.
