The scent of white champaca blossoms hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to Cempaka Putih.
Cempaka Putih a district in Central Jakarta has a rich history. It wasn’t always the bustling place you see today. Originally part of Senen it gained its independence in 1969. The name itself Cempaka Putih means ‘white champaca’ after the fragrant flower. It’s said the name reflects the community’s hope for goodness and prosperity.
Before its official recognition as a district Cempaka Putih was a quieter place. The area now known as Cempaka Putih Barat was the first to develop. In 1952 thirty hectares of land in Rawasari were designated for housing. This land forms the core of today’s West Cempaka Putih. By 1960 a housing neighborhood had sprouted. This development happened around the same time as Tanah Tinggi’s neighborhood.
The district continued to grow. It initially encompassed seven administrative villages. In 1993 however four of those villages broke off to form the new Johar Baru district. Today Cempaka Putih is a densely populated residential area. There are however some upscale housing developments around Cempaka Putih Raya Street.
Major roads such as Pramuka Ahmad Yani and Letjend Suprapto streets have business and office areas. Cempaka Putih Raya itself is lined with shops and restaurants. It is a testament to its evolution from a quiet residential neighborhood. A walk down Rawasari Selatan Raya will show you rows of shops selling tiles ceramics and building materials.
Cempaka Putih today is more than just houses and shops. It boasts several important institutions. These include the Islamic Hospital Jakarta the Pertamina Jaya Hospital Trisakti University’s F Campus Jayabaya University’s B Campus and YARSI University. The area’s growth continues. Several hotels such as the Cempaka Patra Jasa and Sentral Hotel Jakarta offer accommodation. The Green Pramuka Apartment also offers housing options.
So as you stand here in Cempaka Putih remember its journey. From quiet beginnings to a vibrant district. A place shaped by history development and the enduring hope symbolized by the white champaca flower.
