From its inception in 1971 a vision took shape. The Cellular Physiology Institute IFC wasn’t built overnight. It was a culmination of years of planning and collaboration. The Departments of Experimental Biology and Biochemistry joined forces. Their shared ambition a new building at the National Autonomous University of Mexico UNAM. This was no ordinary building. It was to be a haven for cutting-edge research. The east wing housed the Experimental Biology Department. Each researcher would have their own laboratory. This innovative design maximized research potential. It improved working conditions significantly.

The IFC’s official birth was on January 11 1979. Before that it was known as the Center for Research in Cellular Physiology CIFC. This marked its independence from the UNAM’s Institute of Biology and Faculty of Medicine. Antonio Peña Díaz became the first director a pivotal figure in its early years. The CIFC initially had three departments: Bioenergetics Microbiology and Neurosciences. Its broad research focus encompassed membranes receptors transport bioenergetics metabolic regulation neurophysiology neurochemistry ethology and more.

Pioneering researchers laid the foundation. Guillermo Massieu Herminia Pasantes Ricardo Tapia Ibargüengoytia and many others were instrumental. Their expertise spanned biochemistry molecular genetics and neurobiology. They were visionaries who understood the potential of collaborative research. They created a dynamic hub of scientific investigation. Between 1973 and 1979 more researchers joined. Their diverse specializations enriched the institute’s research portfolio. The IFC quickly became one of Mexico’s most productive biomedical research groups.

The IFC also played a vital role in education. In 1973 UNAM approved a program in Basic Biomedical Research. It offered a unique path to doctoral studies. Students could bypass undergraduate degrees in medicine chemistry or biology. This focused approach accelerated the training of top-tier biomedical scientists. The IFC became a core academic site for the program. By 1995 the institute had graduated many masters and doctoral students. It exceeded other program sites in the number of doctoral graduates.

Today the IFC stands as a testament to dedication and innovation. It continues to attract top researchers from across the globe. Its legacy is one of scientific advancement education and collaboration. The institute’s impact extends far beyond its walls. Its researchers actively engage in science communication. They are involved in publishing books writing articles and giving presentations. This ensures the wider dissemination of knowledge and understanding of cell biology. The IFC is a significant contributor to the academic and scientific landscape of Mexico City and Mexico as a whole.
