Could a tower offer more than just a view? The Çekmeköy Seyir Kulesi certainly does. This tower, also known as Çekmekule, isn’t just a place to admire the Istanbul skyline. It’s a symbol of Çekmeköy’s transformation. Part of the Rahmi Demir Kent Ormanı, the Çekmeköy Seyir Kulesi stands 50 meters tall, its 15-meter diameter platform offering a 360-degree panorama of Istanbul. The tower is a relatively new addition to the Istanbul landscape, completed in 2023 under Ekrem İmamoğlu’s administration. It anchors the Rahmi Demir Kent Ormanı, a 333,318-square-meter urban forest designed as a green escape from the bustling city. Originally envisioned with cafes, restaurants, and other amenities, the project faced legal challenges and delays. These issues led to a simplified final design, focused primarily on the observation tower and the natural beauty of the surrounding forest. This green space, with its oak and pine trees, provides walking paths, picnic areas, and children’s playgrounds. It also offers a unique perspective on the challenges of urban development and the importance of preserving natural spaces. The Çekmeköy Seyir Kulesi represents the balance struck between creating attractive urban amenities and protecting the environment.
