Let’s step back in time and trace CEJEP’s origins. The Federal Centers for Technological Education mirrored Brazil’s industrial evolution in the 20th century. These centers played a key role in developing the nation. Vocational education started in 1909. President Nilo Peçanha created Apprentice Craftsmen Schools. These schools offered primary and free vocational education in state capitals.
CEFET/RJ’s story began in 1917. The city government established the Normal School of Arts and Crafts Wenceslau Braz. The school trained teachers and masters. It also trained foremen for vocational education. The federal government took over in 1919. In 1937 the school was restructured. It became a lyceum for vocational education. It served all branches and levels.
In 1937, a new vocational lyceum was planned. Before it opened, its name changed to National Technical School. This aligned with the Organic Law of Industrial Education. In 1942, Decree-Law No. 4,127 established the school. It was responsible for first cycle courses such as industrial and mastery programs. Second cycle courses included technical and pedagogical studies.
Greater autonomy came in 1959. The National Technical School phased out first cycle courses. It focused on technician training. In 1966, Operation Engineering courses were introduced. These courses trained industry professionals in short higher education programs. This was done with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1971, the Teacher Training Center was created. It prepared teachers for technical and Operation Engineering courses.
The school received several names. It was the Federal Technical School of Guanabara in 1965. In 1967, it became the Federal Technical School Celso Suckow da Fonseca. This honored its first director. In 1978, Law No. 6,545 transformed it into a Federal Center for Technological Education.
Since 1978, CEFET/RJ has acted as a special regime autarchy. It is linked to the Ministry of Education and Culture. It has administrative, financial and disciplinary autonomy. CEFET/RJ offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It engages in extension activities. It also conducts research in technology.
CEFET/RJ has expanded. It now includes a headquarters in Maracanã. Seven decentralized units exist. One is in Maria da Graça. Others are in Nova Iguaçu, Petrópolis and Nova Friburgo.
