Tucked away in Melbourne, discover Caulfield Grammar School Malvern Campus. Caulfield Grammar School has a rich history, evolving from humble beginnings to a renowned institution. Founded in 1881 by Joseph Henry Davies, a former missionary, Caulfield Grammar School initially catered to just nine boys near Elsternwick station. Interestingly, although located in Elsternwick, it took its name from Caulfield, the broader regional area. The vicar of St Mary’s Anglican Church in Caulfield played a pivotal role, supporting Davies in establishing the school. This cemented its Anglican affiliation. The school quickly expanded, moving to a new building (later destroyed by fire) and eventually absorbing Hawksburn Grammar School, inheriting its students. In 1909, the school found its current home near the Rippon Lea Estate in St Kilda East, and a boarding house opened in 1912. The school continued to grow, marking its 50th anniversary in 1931 with 500 students. The school transitioned from private ownership to a registered company governed by a School Council, a structure still in place today. A key moment in Caulfield Grammar School’s history came in 1961 when it merged with Malvern Memorial Grammar School. The MMGS campus was then renamed Caulfield Grammar School Malvern Campus. This campus is located in the historic Valentine’s Mansion, built in 1892 and home to a large ballroom. The mansion itself is a testament to history, listed on both the Victorian Heritage Register and the Register of the National Estate. Caulfield Grammar School Malvern Campus currently serves as a primary school for students from kindergarten to Year 6. The school embraced co-education, welcoming girls in 1981, a century after its founding. Today, Caulfield Grammar School maintains its Anglican traditions while offering a comprehensive education to thousands of students across multiple campuses.
