Catumbi derives its name from the indigenous Tupi phrase “ka’á-t-úbi,” meaning “the blue leaf.” This area, marked by the Morro da Mineira favela, holds a population of over 12,500, each resident adding their own verse to the ongoing narrative of Catumbi. Once a tranquil valley shaded by lush foliage and nourished by the Catumbi River, the area transformed. Colonial-era plantations gave rise to grand, multi-storied houses, known as “sobrados.” By the late 19th century, Catumbi flourished as an upper-middle-class suburb, its charm captured in the writings of Machado de Assis.
