Hidden within the vibrant heart of London’s Soho stands the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. This unassuming brick building holds a rich and captivating history. It’s the oldest Catholic church in England excluding those repurposed as Anglican churches then returned to Catholic use. Its story begins not in grand architectural designs but in the shadow of the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780.

The original chapel was part of the Portuguese Embassy. Its destruction during the riots however spurred the construction of the church we see today. The Bavarian embassy took over the lease after the Portuguese moved. They funded the building of a new church designed by Joseph Bonomi the Elder a prominent Italian architect. Completed in 1790 it was dedicated to St Gregory the Great adding to its name.

The Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption’s location in the bustling heart of London gave it a unique role. It served as a haven for prominent Catholics including Mrs Fitzherbert the morganatically married wife of King George IV and the young Cardinal Newman. Even Queen Mary herself a devout Catholic regularly sent flowers to the church’s statue of Our Lady.

The church underwent several renovations throughout the centuries. John Erlam carried out restorations in 1853 and John Francis Bentley a significant figure later responsible for the magnificent Westminster Cathedral contributed further modifications. His work especially in the sanctuary incorporated striking mosaics a miniature preview of his grander project.

For a time the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption became known for its welcoming LGBT masses a testament to its inclusive nature. This tradition though was later moved to another church following Vatican intervention.

Today the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption serves as the central church for the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. This ordinariate welcomes former Anglicans into the Catholic Church. Its enduring legacy is a testament to its resilience adaptability and unwavering commitment to faith. It stands as a silent witness to centuries of London’s religious and social evolution a place of worship and refuge a quiet haven in the city’s ceaseless rhythm.
