There has been a Catholic church on this site since about 1864. But the first building looked very different. It was a more traditional Victorian building. It was a low stone church with a timbered roof. It had considerable charm.

However, in 1963 it was demolished. A new church was built over the next four years. Reynolds and Scott designed it. It had been envisaged that the completion year would have been 1965. But various delays pushed this back. A.K. Brobowski created the sculpture. Goddard and Gibbs designed the stained-glass windows. Architectural expert Nicholas Pevsner wrote of it. He said \”purple brick with aluminium-clad roof and a horrible jagged outline of concrete dormers.\”

Inside, a seventeen-foot pine cross dominated. It had a seven-foot figure of Christ. It had been carved in northern Italy. It was a gift from the patients and staff of St Bernard’s Hospital. Other internal features were also gifts. St Joseph’s Catholic School in Hanwell donated the tabernacle and altar. Their design was unusual. The priest faces the congregation. The Knights of St Columbia donated the font.

Three stained-glass windows were retained from the older building. They were set into the sacristy walls. One commemorated Hanwell men killed in the First World War.

Bishop Patrick Case blessed the church in May 1967. Six hundred people attended the blessing. But it was December 1972 before it was officially consecrated. The bishop told the congregation something after the blessing. He said \”Now you can make use of this lovely church. But the only trouble, as I see it, is that it will not be big enough. We are always building new churches and they always seem to turn out too small.\” Mass had been celebrated the previous Easter. The church was still unfinished then.

The church cost £125,000. Parishioners raised much of this sum. They collected £74,000 between 1963 and 1967. They held fetes, bazaars, whist drives and bingo sessions. It took several years to fully meet the building’s costs.

Rev. Patrick Murphy pioneered the building. He retired shortly before his vision was achieved. Rev. Peter Allen was his successor. He was the first priest in charge. Rev. Mortimer said Allen was \”the Moses of Hanwell.\” He praised his work as priest in his first six months at the church.
