Cathédrale Saint-Spire

Whispers of ancient stones. That’s how I describe Cathédrale Saint-Spire. It stands as a testament to time, faith, and the ever-changing tides of history, right here in Corbeil-Essonnes. Let’s step back in time to 957. Count Haymon, a powerful figure of the era, founded this church. It was designed to house the relics of Saint Exupère, the first bishop of Bayeux. Over the years, Saint Exupère’s name transformed into “Saint Spire”. This magnificent cathedral became Cathédrale Saint-Spire. The original structure met a tragic fate in 1019. It fell victim to a devastating fire. This was not an isolated incident. Fires ravaged the cathedral again in 1137 and 1141. Each time, it rose from the ashes. Each reconstruction reflected the architectural styles of the period, creating a fascinating blend of Romanesque and Gothic elements. Imagine strolling through the heart of Corbeil, the Essonne River flowing nearby. You would arrive at Cathédrale Saint-Spire. It’s surrounded by a peaceful cloister, entered through a pointed archway. The cathedral’s walls speak volumes. Constructed from granite and limestone, they are topped with slate roofing. Inside, you would discover architectural marvels. The transept’s pillars and capitals, crafted in the Romanesque style of the 11th century. The rounded arches of the lower aisles. The ribbed vaults gracing the three-aisled nave, added in the 15th century. Notice the five-sided choir, also from the 15th century. It’s designed like a ciborium, a canopy-like structure. This choir leads to the royal chapels situated above the sacristy. Cathédrale Saint-Spire also houses precious artifacts. A 14th-century marble recumbent statue honors Count Aymon I. A 17th-century carved wooden organ case adds to the cathedral’s grandeur. A painting by Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse depicts an exorcism performed by Saint Exupère.
