Gazing upon the Cathédrale de la Rèsurrection Saint-Corbinien, one might question its very existence. Why build such a grand cathedral in the late 20th century, a time often marked by secularization? The Cathédrale de la Rèsurrection Saint-Corbinien, completed in 1995, stands as a testament to faith and a unique architectural marvel. It’s the only cathedral built from scratch in metropolitan France during the 20th century. Its distinctive cylindrical design, the brainchild of Swiss architect Mario Botta, sets it apart from traditional cathedral architecture. Botta, known for his work on the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, drew inspiration from Byzantine and Romanesque structures of Northern Italy. The circular form, symbolic of divine perfection and human connection, echoes Saint Augustine’s words: “God is like a circle whose circumference is everywhere and the center nowhere.” The cathedral’s exterior is clad in 840,000 handcrafted bricks, a material Botta chose for its humble yet dignified nature. The bricks, made of earth and water, dried by air and fired by fire, represent the communion of the four elements. Twenty-four silver linden trees crown the roof, symbolizing life, resurrection, the hours of the day, and the twelve apostles plus the twelve tribes of Israel. Inside, the circular nave creates a theater-like atmosphere, accommodating up to 1400 worshippers. Twelve stained-glass windows, crafted by Kim En Joong, depict the twelve apostles and the journey from darkness to light. The altar, a single block of Carrara marble, sits at the heart of the chancel. Beneath it, a crypt houses tombs for the diocese’s bishops. A bronze statue of Saint Corbinien, the cathedral’s namesake, stands to the right. Seven tapestries depict scenes from his life. Controversy surrounded the cathedral’s construction. Some questioned the need for such a grand structure in an era of declining religious observance. Others criticized its unconventional design and questioned its funding. Despite the controversy, the Cathédrale de la Rèsurrection Saint-Corbinien stands tall. It is a symbol of resilience, a modern masterpiece, and a place where faith and art intertwine.
