Gazing upon the Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints, you might mistake it for a grand Italian basilica. The Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints actually began its life as an Anglican church. This magnificent structure was designed by Lewis Vulliamy and built in the 1840s. Originally dedicated to All Saints, it served a wealthy parish. Financial constraints meant Vulliamy’s full vision wasn’t realized until 1860, when the bell tower was finally added. In 1891, the Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints underwent a significant transformation. Its western façade was remodeled to closely resemble the Basilica of San Zeno in Verona, Italy. This explains the striking resemblance that catches the eye. In 1955, a twist of fate led to the Anglican parish merging with another nearby. The Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints was entrusted to the Russian Orthodox community. Five years later, it was consecrated as a Russian Orthodox Church, known now as the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and All Saints. This fusion of architectural grandeur and a rich, diverse history makes the Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints a truly captivating landmark in the heart of London.
