Behold the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a city.

Located in the heart of Buenos Aires overlooking Plaza de Mayo, the Cathedral stands as the main Catholic church in Argentina. It has witnessed centuries of history and change. The Cathedral holds a special place in the hearts of Argentinians.

Its story began humbly in 1580. Juan de Garay, the founder of Buenos Aires, set aside land for the city’s main church. This marked the beginning of what would become the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral. The first church was a modest structure. It was made of adobe and wood. Over the years, it was replaced and rebuilt several times.

In 1620, Buenos Aires became the seat of a bishopric by Pope Paul V. The main church gained cathedral status. However, the building was in poor condition. A new cathedral was needed.

The construction of the present-day Cathedral was a long and arduous process. It involved numerous architects and faced many setbacks. The nave collapsed in 1752. Only the facade and towers remained standing. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1779. It was still without a proper facade.

In the 19th century, French architects Prosper Catelin and Pierre Benoit designed the Neoclassical facade. It features twelve columns. They represent the twelve apostles of Christ. The triangular pediment depicts the reunion of Jacob and his son Joseph in Egypt. This symbolizes the unity of the Argentine nation.

Inside the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, the interior is richly decorated. Frescoes depict biblical scenes. Venetian-style mosaics cover the floors. The main gilt wood altarpiece dates back to 1785. It showcases the Rococo style. The Christ of Buenos Aires is the oldest sculpture in the Cathedral. It was carved in 1671.

The Cathedral is also home to an 1871 Walcker organ. It is one of the finest ever manufactured. It has more than 3,500 pipes. Its sound fills the Cathedral.

The mausoleum of General José de San Martín is a significant feature. His remains were brought from France in 1880. The mausoleum is guarded by three female figures. They represent Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

Pope Francis, formerly Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio, held mass here before moving to the Vatican in 2013. The Pope Francis Museum displays some of his personal items.

The Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral has been rebuilt seven times. Each rebuilding reflects the city’s evolving identity. Its Neoclassical facade resembles an ancient temple. Inside, the Cathedral tells stories of faith. It also displays artistic achievements. This iconic landmark stands as a symbol of Argentine history and culture.
