Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

Rising from the heart of Honolulu, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace has witnessed centuries of history unfold. This isn’t just any cathedral. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of faith, a beacon of hope amidst the bustling city. The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace isn’t just the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the United States, dedicated in 1843. It’s also the mother church of the Diocese of Honolulu, a spiritual home for Hawaii’s Catholics. The very stones of this magnificent structure whisper tales of the past. Originally constructed with coral blocks harvested from the shores of Kakaʻako, Waikiki, and Ala Moana, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace stands as a symbol of the deep connection between the church and the land. The first Catholic missionaries, led by Fr. Alexis Bachelot, arrived in Hawaii in 1827. They quickly embraced the local community, learning the Hawaiian language and sharing their faith. But their mission wasn’t without its challenges. In 1831, King Kamehameha III, influenced by Protestant advisors, restricted Catholic practices, leading to the expulsion of the missionaries. However, their exile was short-lived. In 1839, the French frigate Artémise arrived, demanding religious freedom, paving the way for the missionaries’ return and the formal dedication of the cathedral in 1843. Today, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace remains a vibrant hub of faith. The bell tower, constructed in 1917, is the oldest in Hawaii. Its resonant chimes echo through the city streets, a timeless call to prayer. The 1934 pipe organ, also the oldest still in use in Hawaii, fills the cathedral with rich, warm tones. The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace also serves as a sacred resting place for two revered figures. The remains of St. Marianne Cope lie within its walls. A relic of St. Damien de Veuster, also known as Father Damien, is also housed here. These two saints dedicated their lives to serving the Hawaiian community, their legacy intertwined with the cathedral’s history. Even amidst the modern skyscrapers of Honolulu, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace continues to inspire.
