Recall the Orchard Theatre. It stood here before Cathay Cineleisure Orchard. It was modern for its time.
Cathay Cineleisure Orchard stands before us. This urban mall at 8 Grange Road is a hub of activity. Cathay Organisation manages it. It is a subsidiary company of Cathay Cineleisure International.
The mall opened in 1997. It replaced the old Orchard Cinema. The cinema was torn down three years earlier. This was in 1994.
Cathay Cineleisure Orchard became youth-oriented. It has a mix of shops. These include food and beverage outlets plus fashion shops. There is also a hair salon. For recreation, it even boasts an indoor trampoline park. It is found on Level 9.
The Cathay Cineplex used to operate here. It had 12 movie screens. However, it closed in June 2023. Golden Village and The Projector collaborated after that. They launched Golden Village x The Projector or GVxTP. It now occupies the cinema space. The collaboration features six halls in total. Three are Golden Village-branded and three are The Projector-branded.
This building earned the SIA-ICI Colour Award. This was for its creative use of colors. Halls 3 and 6 were once voted Singapore’s best screens. This was in a Straits Times survey in 1998. Ad Post readers also once voted Cathay Cineplex Orchard their favorite cinema.
Cathay Cineleisure Orchard continues to evolve. It honors the site’s heritage. It also provides a space for youth and film buffs. It is an accessible space for everyone.
