Slipping through the corridors of time, we arrive at the Catacumbas, Posgrado. This isn’t about ancient Rome, but right here in Mexico City, at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. Catacumbas, Posgrado isn’t a literal catacomb, but the name evokes a sense of mystery, of knowledge hidden deep within the university’s walls. It’s a space within the university, perhaps a nickname for a postgraduate department. Think of it as a place where students delve into their specialized fields, much like explorers in ancient catacombs. The term “catacumbas” usually refers to underground burial places. The most famous are the Roman catacombs, used by early Christians. The word itself has murky origins, possibly from Greek words meaning “down” and “tumulus” or “cup,” suggesting a depression or hollow. Here at UNAM, Catacumbas, Posgrado takes on a new meaning. It’s a place of intense study, where students ‘bury’ themselves in their research. They emerge with new knowledge, ready to contribute to their fields.
