A massive ceramic mural dominates the Castra Centre’s dome. It’s one of Israel’s largest. This isn’t just any shopping mall. The Castra Centre in Haifa is a unique blend of modern commerce and ancient history.

Built in 2000 the centre sits near the Congress Centre. It’s named after the Castra ruins a Byzantine-era archaeological site. Excavations uncovered a 35-dunam area revealing a predominantly Christian city. This city existed from the early Byzantine period to the start of the Islamic period. Surprisingly a Roman-era mikveh was also found. This points to a Jewish presence as well.

The Castra Centre isn’t just about shopping. It houses two museums. One showcases artifacts from the ancient Castra city. The other tells the story of the Jewish people through puppetry. Art galleries add to the cultural mix. The building itself is a work of art. Architect Uzi Gordon designed it. Its exterior features large porcelain tile paintings by Prof. Eric Bauer. These depict scenes from the Bible like Adam and Eve and David and Goliath.

More than just museums and art the centre offers a supermarket. Various shops cafes restaurants and even a children’s playground are all found here. It even includes medical centres and a hotel. A truly multifaceted destination.

The Castra Centre is more than a place to shop or dine. It’s a journey through time. It blends ancient history with modern convenience. It’s a unique experience. So explore its shops and museums.
