Envision yourself stepping through a doorway, not just any doorway, but one leading to a hidden treasure. This is Casa San Marcos, tucked away in Quito’s charming San Marcos neighborhood. Casa San Marcos isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a living story, whispering tales of centuries past. Originally built in 1702, Casa San Marcos first took root when architect José Jaime Ortiz purchased land for 800 “patacones”. This same Ortiz designed the El Sagrario church and contributed to other significant structures in Quito. Over the centuries, Casa San Marcos witnessed history unfold, passing through the hands of prominent families like the Valdivieso, Baca, Moya Baca, and Ribadeneira families. In the early 20th century, the house underwent a transformation. A wall divided the central patio, splitting the property. Later, the Italian architect Antonio Russo reimagined the façade in the Republican style, adding distinctive window sills, balconies, and ceiling moldings. These details layer onto the rich history of Casa San Marcos, creating a blend of architectural styles. In 1993, one of the current owners, Mayra Ribadeneira de Casares, began a meticulous restoration. Her connection to Casa San Marcos runs deep, having lived there in her early life. After a 15-year pursuit, she and her husband finally acquired the property. The restoration unveiled the “criollo” decor, a mix of styles reflecting the house’s eclectic past. Mayra, an art curator, filled Casa San Marcos with family heirlooms. You might see an 18th-century Italian tapestry in the main drawing room. The art isn’t for sale; it’s part of the experience. Today, Casa San Marcos is a boutique hotel with ten art-filled rooms, a terrace cafe serving Ecuadorian-urban fusion cuisine with views of El Panecillo, an art gallery, and an antique shop. Casa San Marcos offers a unique experience. You’re not just staying in a hotel; you’re stepping into a piece of Quito’s history.
